Hysteroscopic Surgery In India

All About Hysteroscopic Surgery

Hysteroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows doctors to look inside the uterus for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, particularly to address excessive bleeding. The process involves using a thin, lighted, camera-equipped instrument called a hysteroscope, which is inserted through the vagina to inspect the cervix and the interior of the uterus. This enables doctors to view images of the uterine cavity and assess the patient’s condition.

Candidates for Hysteroscopic Surgery

Women experiencing the following symptoms may require hysteroscopic surgery:

  • Heavy or abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Recurrent miscarriages or difficulties in conceiving
  • Post-menopausal bleeding
  • Non-cancerous growths such as polyps, fibroids, and adhesions
  • Displaced intrauterine devices (IUDs)
Procedure Overview

Prior to the procedure, local anesthesia is administered to numb the cervix. The patient lies down on an examination table with legs positioned in stirrups for the pelvic examination.

The cervix is then dilated to allow the hysteroscope to be inserted through the cervix and vagina into the uterus. A liquid solution is introduced into the uterus through the hysteroscope to gently expand the uterine cavity and clear away mucus or blood. This expansion provides the surgeon with a clear view of the uterus, uterine lining, and fallopian tubes.

If any abnormalities are detected, surgical instruments can be inserted through the hysteroscope to remove irregular growths.

Hospital Stay Duration

Hysteroscopy is typically performed on a day-case basis, meaning patients do not usually need to stay overnight in the hospital. The entire procedure generally takes about 30 minutes.

Risks and Complications

Although hysteroscopic surgery is generally very safe, some complications can arise, similar to other surgical procedures. These potential complications include:

  • Infection
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Effects of anesthesia
  • Intrauterine scarring
  • Injury to the uterus, cervix, bladder, or bowel
  • Reactions to substances used for uterine expansion

Patients should be aware of these risks and discuss them with their healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.
