Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery In Artemis Hospital Gurgaon Delhi India
Cardiac surgery is conducted to address diseases or complications related to ischemic heart disease, such as through coronary artery bypass grafting. It also aims to correct congenital heart defects and to treat valvular heart diseases caused by conditions like endocarditis and rheumatic fever.
Cardiac Surgery Can Be Performed In The Following Diseases/Complications:
Coronary Artery Disease – Based on the state of your coronary arteries, your doctor might recommend bypass surgery. This procedure involves grafting a healthy vein or artery from another part of your body to your coronary artery, creating a bypass to enhance blood flow to your heart muscles.
Valvular Heart Disease – Heart valves may be malformed from birth or damaged by conditions such as rheumatic fever or bacterial infections. Additionally, they can deteriorate as a part of the natural aging process.
Congenital Heart Disease – Some individuals are born with defects affecting the heart and major blood vessels. Corrective surgery might be performed during childhood or delayed until adulthood.
Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms – An aneurysm is a sac-like bulge that can form on the wall of a blood vessel. If left untreated, it can become life-threatening. Treatment options include stenting and open surgery.
Tumors of the Heart – A myxoma is the most common cardiac tumor, and is nearly always curable
To diagnose and determine the appropriate treatment for a specific heart disease, the doctor will gather a complete medical history, conduct a thorough physical examination, and order specialized diagnostic tests.
Major types of cardiac surgeries include coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG), heart valve surgery, minimally invasive procedures, transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMR), congenital heart defect repairs, and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair.
Open Heart Surgery:
When the patient’s chest is opened for surgery on the heart, the term “open” refers to the chest, not necessarily the heart itself. Whether the heart is opened depends on the specific type of surgery being performed.
During open heart surgery, a heart-lung machine may be employed to maintain the patient’s circulation while the surgeon accesses the chest and performs modifications to the heart or its surface arteries. The types of open-heart surgeries vary depending on the condition being addressed and the patient’s overall health.

Vascular Surgery:
Vascular surgery is a specialized field that focuses on managing diseases of the vascular system, including arteries, veins, and the lymphatic system. Treatment options range from medical therapy to minimally-invasive catheter procedures and surgical reconstruction.
The primary types of arterial diseases include occlusive and aneurysmal disease, characterized by the narrowing or ballooning of arteries, respectively. Occlusive disease, akin to arterial narrowing in the heart, can occur anywhere in the body. Symptoms are often recognized if it affects the legs or abdomen (potentially leading to ulcers or gangrene) or the neck arteries (which may result in a stroke).
Peripheral vascular disease affects smokers and also patients who have undergone coronary stenting or bypass surgery.
A significant portion of individuals with long-standing diabetes experience vascular complications. In a country where more than four crore people are estimated to have diabetes, the number of individuals with vascular issues is substantial. Diabetic patients face a heightened risk of lower limb amputations compared to the general population, many of which can be prevented with the intervention of a vascular surgeon.
We will be offering basic and advanced screening for vascular diseases at the Artemis Hospitals.
The prevalence of venous disease has often been underestimated. A clot in the deep veins, if it migrates to the lungs, can result in sudden death. Certain individuals are predisposed to clot formation when their blood lacks certain proteins necessary to maintain its fluidity. Immobilization or damage to vessel linings can also contribute to clot formation. Unilateral painful calf swelling should be treated as a serious concern.
Varicose veins (dilated and tortuous veins) are also a common problem, if untreated can lead to skin changes, itching and ulcers.
Treatment for lymphatic disease (swelling of the legs) is mainly conservative.
